EVALUATION

The Small Projects Foundation has helped create 7 purpose built organisations to meet specific developmental needs in the Eastern Cape Province and South Africa.

1.

The first, Khanyisa Early Childhood Development Centre, has engaged very successfully in training  Educare Supervisors throughout the rural areas of the old Ciskei. This operation now receives a yearly subsidy from the Eastern Cape Government and will be able to continue with its work.

2.

The Amatola Finance Corporation was formed to provide micro-loan finance to low-income people in housing, micro-enterprises and education. It has helped more than 10 000 borrowers and is now financially viable. Renamed the Alternative Finance Corporation.

3.

Regional Educare Council was formed to assist poor children to obtain access to Educare facilities and has since assisted more than 2 000 Educare centres throughout the Province.

4.

Strandloper Ecotourism Board was formed to promote ecotourism along the Eastern Province coastline and has developed the Strandloper Trail, which has become self-supporting.

5.

The SPF Infoshop Company was formed to provide information, training and support to poor people throughout sub-Saharan Africa through the utilisation of mini-resource centres. This organisation performs the project management, training, social marketing and implementation of projects throughout South Africa.

6.

Own Haven Housing Association.  Developing social housing initiatives in Buffalo City with the Van Der Leij Habitat Foundation.

7.

Sinebhongo Village.  A housing development organisation, which developed housing and safe environments for single working mothers.

The Foundation has also been a leading organisation in capacity building of community leadership and entrepreneurs to enable them to develop water supplies and housing for their communities. SPF has assisted 621 communities/community interest groups in raising their quality of life economically, physically and socially.

The Foundation has helped develop and strengthen 45 Community Based Organisations throughout the Eastern Cape Province.

The Foundation has kept its overheads low by retaining a very small permanent staff and hiring in competent contract workers, consultants and businesses to do the work under the guidance and management of the Foundation. This allows for great flexibility and speed in achieving maximum impact and development.
