KING WILLIAMS TOWN TOURISM AND INTERPRETATION CENTRE

Spearheaded by Small Projects Foundation, the King William’s Town Tourism and Interpretation Centre seeks to provide an excellent tourism and information service to tourists and stakeholders. It is a community – centred hub benefiting local artists, tourism product owners and promoting the region as a tourist destination.

A building to be used as the tourism centre was identified, approval for the use obtained, and renovations are near completion.

The project was started in November 2004 and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) budgeted R4 million for the project. Five SMME’s were used for catering and training.

The environmental rehabilitation programme created 210 temporary jobs or 30,158 person days of employment. The labourers received training by completing courses in Herbicide Applicator, First Aid and Public Cleanup. Twenty Tourism Reception and Guiding Learnerships have been completed to support the Tourism Centre.

A research team compiled a report which indicates the role King William’s Town played in contemporary history, specifically with regard to politics, education, journalism and the role missionaries played in the community.
