Capacity for Active Citizenship

Over a period of 24 months, this exciting programme has concentrated on empowering individuals and communities in two districts: Amathole-Amahlati sub-district & Buffalo City.

We commenced this exciting programme at the beginning of June 2015. It was funded by the European Union.

Our programme Manager, Alan Wild and his team, Faith Manyakanyaka, Project Officer for the Amathole District, and Tembelani Zamxaka, Project Officer for the Buffalo City District, increased communities access to both primary health care and social services & increased communities participation in planning for and the delivery of these services within Amathole and Buffalo City Districts.

Our mandate

Our mandate was to integrate the voice and active participation of citizens into the work of health clinics and OVC service providers and their respective departments’ line function. This would ensure sustainability and resource contributions and support. It also ensured the integration of services at grass roots level feeding up to the clinic level, with our aim of benefitting the patients, OVCs, communities, the sub-districts and ultimately the districts in terms of best practices.

We took a participatory evaluation of clinic health services of 30 clinics and development of quality services improvement plans per clinic. We identified OVCs and their needs, and found support within the respective 30 wards in order to develop OVC safety nets in each ward.
