Foetal Alcohol Syndrome

Funded by the EC Liquor Board, this programme is being carried out in the Nyandeni Sub-district (Ngqeleni). With Programme Manager, Khuzwayo August, at the helm of this project, Community Healthcare Workers conduct awareness workshops at taverns & shebeens and at the antenatal clinics on the dangers of drinking while pregnant, which carries a very high risk of their baby being born with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

13 clinics are involved and four Community Healthcare Worker per clinic (52 in total) are approaching the taverns.

Achievements

– All 52 Community Healthcare Workers have been trained in FAS

– Our CHWs have visited 135 shebeens

– we have educated 1 431 women and men

-Our CHWs have reached 55 people per clinic every month
