Newlands Community Healthcare Workers guide, comfort & educate new moms
We have recruited three Community Healthcare Workers as Mentor Moms. These mentor moms are receiving training on foetal alcohol syndrome, food security, gardening, as well as mother and baby care. Arrangements have also been made for a facilitator to train the new mentor moms on growth monitoring. Growth monitoring is of vital importance since any fluctuations in the consistency of a child’s weight and height can indicate malnutrition and other developmental problems.
We have met with the clinic operations manager, together with the mentor moms, to introduce the initiative to them. They are extremely excited, saying that it’s much needed in all their local areas.
We have also bought the equipment necessary for gardening. We are in the process of getting the necessary equipment for the mentor moms who we are identifying at this stage.
“When I go around, I help her with housework, or anything that she needs: washing. Cleaning the house. Gardening. I don’t mind what it is, as long as I can assist her in some way.”
