Training & mentoring community based organisations

We split our intervention into two parts: the first being training & the second being mentorship. First a contact week was set up at a central venue where organisations were collectively trained through various manuals, and secondly, two site mentorship visits were made before the close out of the project.

National Development Agent (NDA) during the 2014/15 financial year continued with the Capacity Building of non-profit organisations (NPO’s) in the Eastern Cape Province, which is also rolled out throughout South Africa. SPF was allocated 2 districts, being the Chris Hani District and OR Tambo District.

The NDA Round two Capacity Building and Mentorship Project was approached slightly differently this time. Whereas, Round one had 23 projects (46 Delegates) at one venue at one time, round two was split into two phases. Phase one, Chris Hani District, with 13 organizations expected (26 delegates) and 12 organisations attending, and Phase two, OR Tambo District, with 14 organizations expected (28 delegates) and also 12 organisations attending.

Background info and Activities

The National Department of Social Development’s goal is to revive a model of working Home Community Based Care (HCBC). Our role has been multi-focal: as part of the research engine on the model, in the pilot programme for the HCBC model, in providing capacity building for the development of HCBC model as a pilot programme with collaboration with Sakhingomso (Indwe) and Masibambisane (Mdantsane) HCBC organisation in the Eastern Cape Province.

Activities

  • Provide capacity in a form of training to select NPOs in Chris Hani District & OR Tambo District.
  • Do pre-training evaluation assessment & post-training assessment of these selected organisations.
  • Conduct assessment & evaluation programmes to assess the impact of the training programme.
  • Overall monitoring & mentorship after the training has been completed, using their established project in measuring the capacity built through our programme.
  • Training like Basic Bookkeeping, Governance, Conflict Management, Project Management and Resource Mobilisation was carried out.

Our achievements so far

A grass roots investment made during these interventions are adding increasing value. Individual participants have grown immensely on a personal level. Delegates have taken the sessions seriously and have started an implementation process in their organisations. The interaction between participants and these organisations increased as their confidence has grown over the past few weeks. These organisations have been applying these skills to improve the running of their organisations and to improve services to their beneficiaries.
