Oxfam Buffalo City Municipality Support Programme | Italian Government through Oxfam Italia

We committed to improving the quality of life of communities living within the Buffalo City Municipal areas of Tsholomnqa, Newlands and Vergenoeg.

We did two things:

  • Create community awareness and establish structures within the health sector by establishing and training ward committees, training CHWs and holding PLAs to ensure those who are supplying services to communities are held accountable.

  • Provide short loans
to those sections of the local economic development sector who are unable to access loans from available financial institutions because they are too small.

Oxfam Italia’s involvement came to an end in September 2015 when we took over the programme. We have the involvement of four members from Oxfam Italia and two from Small Projects Foundation.

We also worked in conjunction with the EC Rural Development Agency and the Loaves and Fishes Network & were funded by the Italian Government through its local agent Oxfam Italia.

Our achievements so far

  • 37 CHWs have received 74 days of training in running and managing PLAs.
  • 40 PLAs have been completed of a total anticipated of 42 to be completed.
  • 91 loans were provided to 77 different individuals, totalling R123 700. A total of 33 loans have been repaid in full.
  • Our costs of managing the loan book is covered by the Small Business Support Programme.
