EU Match Project
This project which is being carried out in the OR Tambo District was implemented as a partnership between SPF and Oxfam Italia. The project commenced in 2012, following the 2011 PMTCT pilot project funded by the Meyer Paediatric Hospital and initiated at the Holy Cross Gateway Clinic in Flagstaff. Support was provided to 13 clinics in Lusikisiki and Flagstaff and was mirrored by projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania, also supported by the European Union (EU).
Charlize Theron Africa Outreach
This programme, made possible by funding from the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, is being carried out in the Newlands area with its primary aim being the prevention of HIV infection of South African youth using a human rights and gender equality-based approach to HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support in line with the HIV/AIDS/STD Strategic Plan for South Africa 2007-2011. The programme has been extended to the Chalumna area as of November 2015.
Foetal Alcohol Syndrome
This programme, funded by the EC Liquor Board, is being carried out in the Nyandeni Sub-district (Ngqeleni). Its purpose is to counteract the high volume of alcohol consumed by pregnant women due to a lack of knowledge about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy. The activities involve CHW’s carrying out awareness workshops at taverns/shebeens and at the ANC clinics on the dangers of drinking while pregnant due to the high risk of their unborn baby being born with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).
Kistefos HIV/AIDS Action
This PMTCT and paediatric ART support programme, funded by Kistefos in Norway has been in place in Port St Johns, OR Tambo District, since 2009.
The project focuses on: PMTCT, Provision of ART to pregnant women, mothers and children, Capacity building of nurses and CHW’s on PMTCT and ART provision, Gardening programme, Health systems strengthening, Community mobilization.
Kistefos Phase 2
The new programme, which was also funded by Kistefos, Norway, is currently underway and replicating the methodology and work of the Kistefos/Isilimela HIV/AIDS Action Programme into 3 new health sub-districts, namely Nyandeni, Mhlontlo and Qaukeni in the OR Tambo District Municipality over a 30 month period.
One to One Paediatric ART Support Programme
This programme which is being carried out in Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Kareedouw, Sundays River Valley, Queenstown, Whittlesea and Nyandeni has been in place in some of the areas of the province since 2004 and in others since 2011. The methodology is well-established, although always flexible enough to introduce new elements, as dictated by health-related legislation and policy, and the needs of the communities with whom we work.
Pampers New Moms Education Programme
SPF and Proctor and Gamble’s aims for this programme is to target the United Nations Millenium Development Goals (MDG’s) related to child and maternal health and to address the aims of the Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal, New Born and Child Mortality (CARMMA) policy of South Africa. This programme has been initiated in 204 hospitals across all 9 provinces.
Eye Cataract Project
The Eastern Cape Province is estimated to have 38,354 people who are blind (RAAB study 2010: Fred Hollows Foundation, SA) of whom 62,2% or 24,000 people are blind due to cataracts. Cataract surgery is available and takes about 15 minutes per operation: There are crucial problems in identification of cataracts, referral and transporting patients to operations.
SPF support the Health Department in the Eastern Cape to provide vision to people who are blind.
