Foetal Alcohol Syndrome | Eastern Cape Liquor Board

This programme, funded by the EC Liquor Board, is being carried out in the Nyandeni Sub-district (Ngqeleni). Its purpose is to counteract the high volume of alcohol consumed by pregnant women due to a lack of knowledge about the dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

Programme Manager, Khuzwayo August reports that the activities involve CHW’s carrying out awareness workshops at taverns/shebeens and at the ANC clinics on the dangers of drinking while pregnant due to the high risk of their unborn baby being born with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). 13 clinics are involved and 4 CHW’s per clinic (52 in total) are approaching the taverns.

  • All 52 CHW’s have been trained in FAS.
  • To date a 135 shebeens have been visited to conduct talks.
  • To date 1,431 women and men have been reached.
  • At present we are reaching 55 people per clinic per month.
